A practical local image cutout

What is an AI background remover?

An AI background remover separates the subject of a picture from everything behind it. Instead of tracing every edge by hand, a segmentation model estimates how likely each pixel is to belong to the foreground. The result is stored as an alpha mask: white areas are kept, black areas become transparent, and grey values create partially transparent edges around hair, fur, fabric and other fine details.

PNGCut turns that process into a browser tool. Choose a portrait, product, pet, logo or everyday object and the page prepares a transparent PNG without requiring a desktop editor. The important difference is where the work happens. When the required browser features are available, the file is analysed locally with ONNX Runtime Web. WebGPU is requested first for graphics-processor acceleration, while WebAssembly provides a compatible CPU path when WebGPU cannot be used.

Automatic removal is only the first step. Real photographs contain shadows, reflections, overlapping people, motion blur and colours that blend into the scene. PNGCut therefore keeps the original image available inside the editor. You can erase unwanted foreground pixels, restore a missing hand or product corner, tighten or soften the edge, choose a new background colour and export the reviewed result. That correction stage matters more than a dramatic “one-click” promise because no segmentation model is right for every image.

Built around the complete task

Features and benefits that remain useful after the first click

A good photo background remover should help you reach a usable file, not simply display a rough preview. PNGCut combines local inference, careful export controls and manual mask tools in one focused workspace. The interface stays simple for a quick profile picture, while the deeper controls remain available for a marketplace image, classroom graphic or client presentation.

WebGPU with automatic fallback

Compatible browsers use WebGPU for local acceleration. If that path cannot start, WebAssembly continues on the CPU without asking you to choose a technical setting.

Local-first file handling

The selected image is decoded and processed in the browser. This reduces unnecessary transfer of personal photos and makes the workflow easier to inspect.

A real correction editor

Erase and Restore support hard Circle, hard Square and Soft circle brushes. Undo, Redo and Reset mask make experimentation reversible.

High-resolution composition

The AI mask is estimated at a consistent working size, then composed over the decoded source dimensions for the downloadable result.

Editable bulk mode

Process up to twenty images sequentially, open any successful result in the full editor, save the correction to that item and create one ZIP locally.

Honest progress and errors

Model loading, runtime selection, inference and export report distinct status messages instead of leaving a spinner on screen without context.

From file to transparent pixels

How browser-based background removal works

  1. The browser validates the file. PNGCut checks the file type and 15 MB size limit before loading the model. An invalid extension or damaged image produces a readable error rather than being sent anywhere.
  2. The image is decoded locally. Browser image APIs apply the orientation information when possible and create a working bitmap. The original file remains available for Restore edits.
  3. The AI runtime is selected. PNGCut checks for WebGPU and attempts a GPU execution session. If the browser, driver or model operator support blocks that path, ONNX Runtime Web starts its WebAssembly provider.
  4. The model estimates a foreground mask. A normalised copy is converted to a numeric tensor. The model returns one probability for each position, describing foreground confidence rather than a finished picture.
  5. Main-subject cleanup is applied. Connected high-confidence regions are measured. The dominant subject is kept, similarly sized group subjects are preserved, and smaller detached regions are suppressed while nearby soft edge pixels are allowed to remain.
  6. The mask is composed at source dimensions. The original image receives the alpha mask and becomes a transparent PNG. The editor can then change the mask without running the model again.

ONNX Runtime’s web documentation describes browser inference as a way to keep data on the device and use execution providers such as WebGPU or WebAssembly. WebGPU itself remains dependent on browser and hardware support, so a production tool must include a fallback and explain when it is being used. PNGCut does both in the status area rather than treating every machine as identical.

Step-by-step workflow

How to remove an image background with PNGCut

  1. Choose Single image or Bulk. Single mode is best when one picture needs detailed review. Bulk accepts up to twenty files and gives every successful result its own editor.
  2. Add the image. Drag it into the upload area, use Browse image, or copy an image and press Ctrl+V on Windows or Command+V on macOS. Pasting works when the clipboard exposes an image file.
  3. Keep the page open. The first visit downloads the AI model. Watch the status message to see model loading, WebGPU or WebAssembly selection, background removal and main-subject cleanup.
  4. Inspect the comparison. Move the before-and-after slider across the preview. Check hair, ears, fingers, product corners, gaps between limbs, transparent surfaces and any object that overlaps the main subject.
  5. Correct the mask. Choose Erase for remaining background pixels or Restore for missing subject pixels. Start with a smaller brush. Use Soft circle around hair and a harder shape around products or graphics.
  6. Adjust the edge conservatively. Edge Cleanup can tighten a pale halo; a negative value can recover a softer transition. Add only a little Feather. Excessive feathering creates a glow that becomes obvious over a contrasting background.
  7. Choose the background and format. Keep Transparent for flexible PNG or WebP use. Choose white, black or a custom colour when that backdrop must be included. JPG always needs an opaque background.
  8. Download and verify. Open the saved file outside the browser. Confirm dimensions, transparency and important edges before deleting the original or sending the result to a client.

Editing a bulk result

Bulk processing runs files one at a time to limit memory pressure. When a card becomes ready, click Edit image. The same full editor opens with that file’s original pixels, AI mask and adjustment controls. After correcting it, choose Save edits to bulk. The card receives the new PNG, and the final ZIP uses that corrected version. Closing the editor without saving leaves the existing bulk result unchanged.

Chrome and Edge currently provide the most predictable WebGPU route on supported hardware. WebGPU also requires a secure context, which the HTTPS version of PNGCut provides. A browser can expose WebGPU and still reject a session because of a driver, operator or memory limitation; that is why the WebAssembly fallback remains part of the tool. Firefox, Safari and other current browsers may use WebAssembly depending on their available features.

Mobile support does not mean every phone can process twenty large photographs comfortably. Browser tabs share limited memory with the operating system and other apps. For a phone, use one moderate-resolution file first, keep the page visible and wait for the status to finish. Desktop Chrome or Edge with hardware acceleration is the better choice for repeated or bulk work.

Local by design

Privacy and security considerations

PNGCut’s local background-removal path does not need the selected photo to be uploaded for inference. The browser fetches the application code, runtime and model; the image itself is decoded into browser memory. Exported files are created with Canvas APIs and downloaded through a temporary local object URL. This architecture reduces unnecessary exposure of portraits, identification photographs, client products and unpublished design work.

Local processing is not a promise that every device is private in every circumstance. Browser extensions, managed workplace devices, malware, screen recording and operating-system backup tools are outside this page’s control. Use a trusted, updated browser; avoid unknown extensions; and do not process material you are not authorised to access. If an image is legally or commercially sensitive, follow the security rules of the organisation that owns it.

Speed without misleading promises

Performance, model caching and Core Web Vitals

The tool interface is separated from the heavy AI runtime. That means the explanatory page, headings and upload controls can render before ONNX Runtime and the model are needed. The processing code is client-only, and the runtime is loaded when the user approaches or activates the upload area. Static text, schema and navigation do not wait for inference code.

The first model download is the largest cost. A progress bar reports those bytes instead of presenting an indefinite animation. Static hosting can cache the model and runtime with long-lived cache headers, which makes repeat visits faster. During inference, WebGPU can reduce compute time on a compatible graphics processor. WebAssembly uses the CPU and may take longer, especially on phones or power-saving laptops.

Page performance should be measured in production, not assumed from a framework name. PNGCut uses semantic HTML, a static export, limited animation, lazy image previews and dynamic AI imports. Those decisions support good Largest Contentful Paint, Interaction to Next Paint and Cumulative Layout Shift, but a Lighthouse score is affected by hosting, third-party scripts, device simulation and network conditions. The goal is a fast, stable experience rather than an unverifiable guaranteed score.

A fair evaluation

Advantages and limitations

Advantages

  • No signup for the core workflow
  • Local inference when browser processing is available
  • WebGPU acceleration with a compatible fallback
  • Reversible Erase, Restore, Undo and Redo
  • Bulk results can be corrected before ZIP creation
  • Transparent PNG and WebP export

Limitations

  • The first model download is large
  • WebAssembly can be slow on older devices
  • AI can misunderstand overlapping subjects
  • Glass, smoke and motion blur remain difficult
  • Browser memory limits very large bulk jobs
  • Results still require human review

These limitations are not hidden behind a generic error. PNGCut reports which runtime is active and keeps a manual path available. If the image is destined for a billboard, legal document, medical communication or premium product campaign, treat the browser result as a starting mask and perform a professional review at the final output size.

Better input, cleaner output

Tips and troubleshooting

Use a clear original

Choose the highest-quality version you legitimately have. Avoid a screenshot of a compressed social-media image when the original camera file is available. Include the whole subject, keep the focus on the intended foreground, and prefer lighting that separates it from the background. Cropped shoes, fingers or product corners cannot be reconstructed by Restore because those pixels do not exist in the original.

Correct the mask in small passes

Use a broad hard brush only for an obvious region far from the subject. Near an edge, reduce Brush Size and follow the boundary with several short strokes. Soft circle is useful for flyaway hair, fur and soft fabric; Square works well for packaging and signs. Undo one poor stroke instead of resetting an otherwise good correction.

Avoid the halo problem

A pale or dark fringe usually comes from background colour mixed into edge pixels. Test the cutout over a background that contrasts with the original scene. Increase Edge Cleanup gradually, then add a small amount of Feather only if the outline becomes too hard. Large feather values spread transparency in both directions and can create a glow rather than a clean transition.

When the model does not load

Refresh once and keep the tab open. Confirm that content blockers are not preventing static model or WebAssembly files from loading. Clear enough storage for browser caching, and try a normal window if a private window deletes large cached assets. A corporate network may block unfamiliar binary files; in that case, follow the organisation’s policy rather than bypassing its controls.

When WebGPU fails

Update Chrome or Edge, enable hardware acceleration and restart the browser. Remote desktop sessions, virtual machines, old graphics drivers and battery-saving modes can disable or limit GPU access. PNGCut falls back to WebAssembly, so a WebGPU failure is not automatically a failed image. The CPU path simply needs more patience.

Focused, transparent and repairable

Why use PNGCut?

PNGCut is built around a clear promise: provide useful image and PDF tasks without forcing an account or hiding the workflow. For background removal, that means explaining the local AI model, showing WebGPU or WebAssembly status, keeping the original available for Restore, and letting the user correct bulk results before download. It does not mean pretending every photograph can be perfect in one click.

The wider toolkit gives the cutout a practical next step. Resize or crop it in Image Studio, reduce a web asset in Image Compressor, place prepared images into a PDF, export PDF pages, merge documents, split pages or extract an existing text layer. Every function has its own stable page so it can be bookmarked and understood without a pop-up.

20 questions found

Is PNGCut’s AI Background Remover free?

Yes. The background remover can be used without creating an account or buying a subscription. Your browser downloads the local AI model and processes supported images on your device. Normal internet data charges may still apply when the model is downloaded for the first time.

Does PNGCut upload my photo to a server?

This version is designed for local browser processing. The selected image is decoded, analysed and exported on your device through ONNX Runtime Web. The page does not intentionally send the image to PNGCut’s server. Browser developer tools can be used to inspect network activity if you need independent verification.

Which image formats are supported?

You can choose JPG, JPEG, PNG and WebP images. Each file can be up to 15 MB. The edited result can be downloaded as PNG, WebP or JPG. Choose PNG when you need real transparency because JPG does not support an alpha channel.

What is WebGPU, and why does PNGCut use it?

WebGPU is a modern browser API that can run suitable computing tasks on a compatible graphics processor. PNGCut requests the WebGPU execution provider first because it can accelerate local AI inference. When WebGPU is unavailable or cannot run the model, the tool starts the WebAssembly CPU fallback automatically.

Why is the first background removal slower?

The first run must download and initialise the packaged AI model. That model is much larger than the page interface because it contains the learned parameters used to estimate foreground pixels. Browsers normally cache the model, so later visits on the same device and browser are often faster.

Will every image finish in ten seconds?

No honest browser tool can guarantee one fixed time for every device. Processing depends on the image, browser, graphics support, available memory, thermal limits and whether the model is already cached. A modern desktop with WebGPU will usually be faster than an older phone using WebAssembly.

Can PNGCut remove a background from a group photo?

It can, but automatic main-subject selection must make a judgement about which people belong to the foreground. Similarly sized connected subjects are more likely to remain. If a person is removed or an unrelated person remains, use Restore or Erase in the manual mask editor before downloading.

How do I fix hair, fur or a difficult edge?

Start with a small Soft circle brush and use Restore over missing hair or Erase over background pixels that remain. Then use a low Feather value for a gentler transition. Large feather settings can create a visible halo, so zoom in and make several small corrections instead of one broad stroke.

What is the difference between Erase and Restore?

Erase removes an area from the foreground mask, making those pixels transparent. Restore brings pixels back from the original uploaded image. Restore is useful when the AI removes a hand, product corner, clothing edge or hair strand that should be part of the final cutout.

Which brush shapes are available?

Circle gives a hard rounded correction, Square is useful around box-shaped products and straight edges, and Soft circle creates a feathered correction. Brush Size controls the affected area, while Softness controls how gradually a Soft circle fades toward its edge.

Can I undo a manual correction?

Yes. The editor keeps a stroke history for Undo and Redo. Reset mask removes all manual brush strokes and returns to the original AI mask. Reset all also returns colour, feather, brightness, contrast, saturation, hue, shadow and export controls to their default values.

Can I add a new background colour?

Yes. Choose white, black or Custom colour in the editor. Clicking the colour picker automatically selects the custom background mode. A transparent PNG remains the best choice when you want to place the cutout over several different designs later.

Does the tool keep the original image resolution?

The model analyses a standardised working copy, but the final alpha mask is composed at the decoded dimensions of your uploaded image. Very large photos still require more memory, and a mobile browser may reduce reliability when several high-resolution files are processed together.

Can I remove backgrounds from several images?

Bulk mode accepts up to twenty images and processes them sequentially to avoid excessive memory use. Each successful result has its own Edit image button. Save your corrections back to that bulk item, then download all prepared PNG files in one ZIP.

Why did the AI keep another object or person?

Segmentation models use visual evidence rather than understanding your intention. A second person, chair, bag or sign can look like part of the subject when it overlaps the foreground or has a strong boundary. Erase that area manually, or use a source photo with clearer separation.

Why did part of my subject disappear?

Motion blur, low contrast, transparency, shadows and similar foreground/background colours can make the boundary uncertain. Use Restore to recover missing pixels from the original. For an important product listing, photograph the item against an evenly lit, contrasting background before running the tool.

Which browsers work best?

A current Chrome or Edge release on an HTTPS connection generally provides the strongest WebGPU path. Other modern browsers can use WebAssembly when the required web features are available. Private browsing, strict extensions, low-memory devices or disabled hardware acceleration may affect model loading.

Can I use PNGCut on a phone?

Yes. The layout, upload controls, comparison slider and editor adapt to small screens. A phone has less memory and sustained processing power than a desktop, so begin with one moderate-size image. Keep the browser tab visible while local AI processing is running.

Can I use the result commercially?

The tool does not grant rights to the source image, person, logo or product. You are responsible for having permission to edit and use the uploaded material. Review the cutout carefully before advertising, publishing or printing because automated output can contain mistakes.

What should I do if processing fails?

Confirm that the file is a valid JPG, PNG or WebP under 15 MB, refresh the page, close memory-heavy tabs and try again. Updating the browser or enabling hardware acceleration may restore WebGPU. If WebGPU fails, wait for the WebAssembly fallback rather than repeatedly selecting the same file.

Conclusion

A faster first cut, with the controls needed to finish it

PNGCut’s AI Background Remover combines local WebGPU or WebAssembly inference with the part automatic tools often skip: review and correction. Upload, compare, erase, restore, adjust and export from one responsive page. Use the automatic mask to save time, but keep your judgement in the workflow. A carefully checked cutout is more valuable than a fast file that looks wrong when placed on its final background.
